Speeding & School Safe Zones
Speed limits generally
Government advice is 20mph is not a nationally recognised speed limit however the Traffic Authority (Shropshire Council) may introduce local speed limits appropriate to an area. There is a significant legal process to introduce enforceable speed limit zones; traffic authorities may consider that alternative advisory measures are more appropriate. What Shropshire Council is doing
The Council commissioned a report in 2017 which made recommendations for traffic calming on the A528 through Cockshutt Village. The A528 Speed Management Report in 2017 included analysis of options including an informal crossing near the school. CCP-PC is minded to support a formal crossing on the A528.
There was a Shropshire Council cost/benefit report in 2018 on which the current draft transport plan is based, Shropshire Council current policy is to consider 20 mph zones outside schools, some residential streets and town centre areas. Surveys commenced in 2020 to assess the need for 20 mph school zones; Cockshutt Village A528 was placed on the list.
Work began in 2023 on a five year rolling programme starting with those schools with highest priority.
